Is Wookey Brewing Co’s Luna Pale Ale Actually Protected by Witchcraft? A 9.5/10 Revelation!

Deep in the shadowy underworld of Somerset’s Mendip Hills lies Wookey Brewing Co – a brewery that’s no stranger to legends of witches, caves, and ancient mysteries. Their flagship spot draws from the infamous Wookey Hole Caves, long tied to tales of the “Witch of Wookey” and eerie folklore. But their Luna Pale Ale takes things a step further with a clever nod to real historical magic: the VV Marian protection mark proudly featured in the logo.

For those unfamiliar, the VV (or overlapping double-V forming a W) is an ancient apotropaic symbol – essentially a “ward off evil” carving used across Britain, especially from the medieval and early modern periods. These marks, often etched into caves, churches, doorframes, and hearths, invoked the protection of the Virgin Mary (“Virgo Virginum” – Virgin of Virgins) to repel witches, demons, and bad luck. Wookey Hole itself is famous for clusters of these ritual protection marks, scratched into the limestone by people centuries ago who genuinely believed they could keep malevolent forces at bay.

So when Wookey Brewing Co stamps that historic VV symbol on their Luna can, it’s more than just cool branding – it’s a cheeky claim to supernatural safeguarding. But does the beer itself live up to the legend? Spoiler: it absolutely does.

Luna is a 4.1% British Pale Ale that’s also gluten-free and vegan-friendly, making it accessible to more drinkers without sacrificing character. Brewed with classic Fuggle and Aurora hops, it pours a beautiful pale gold with an astonishingly persistent head – seriously, this foam refused to die even after half an hour.

That’s the kind of stubborn resilience that makes you wonder if a little cave magic really did find its way into the fermenter.

The aroma hits first: fresh grassy hedgerows after rain, earthy British hop goodness, and a subtle herbal lift. On the palate, it’s clean and balanced – floral notes dance through without any aggressive bitterness, letting the traditional English hop character shine. It’s thirst-quenching, sessionable, and dangerously easy to drink. No off-flavours, no heaviness, just pure refreshment with a touch of that Mendip mystique.

I scored this one a massive 9.5 out of 10. In a world of over-hopped hazies and pastry stouts, Luna stands out as a masterclass in classic pale ale done right – and that persistent head? Maybe it’s the VV doing its job.

If you’re near Somerset or spot it in cans (or even cask these days), grab one. Who knows – it might just protect you from a bad day… or worse.
